CALL FOR WALLS
LOOKING FOR WALLS IN NEWTON FOR FUTURE MURALS

NEWTON, NC —The Newton Public Art Commission invites local building owners in the city of Newton to submit their walls for consideration for future mural projects. Studies have shown that murals and other public art are good investments to increase economic development. Public art creates a vibrant community atmosphere and draws people from other areas to visit the city.

We are looking for walls that have good visibility from either foot traffic or vehicle traffic. The walls must be in good condition and not in need of repair. Access to outdoor power and water are a bonus.

You must be the owner of the building in order to submit. If your wall is chosen for a future project then you will be required to sign an amendment to the deed on the property that ensures that the artwork is kept intact on the wall for a minimum of 5 years.

There is no guarantee that your wall will be selected for a mural project, but we want to start building a list of property owners that are interested and willing to work with us for future projects as we work to bring more beautiful murals to Newton.

ELIGIBILITY

The building must be within Newton city limits. The wall must be an exterior wall.

You must be the owner of the building in order to submit. If your wall is chosen for a future project then you will be required to sign an amendment to the deed on the property that ensures that the artwork is kept intact on the wall for a minimum of 5 years.

SELECTION PROCESS

The Newton Public Art Commission will choose walls as future projects come up.

Highest priority will be given to walls that:

  • Have good visibility to pedestrian and vehicle traffic

  • Do not require any kind of repair. (no loose mortar, cracking stucco, or other issues that would require repair before investing in art)

  • Align with a specific project’s intent.

  • Have owner flexibility on mural content/design. If you have requirements that the mural be of a particular topic it lowers the probability the wall will be chosen unless it just happens to align with a project.

Commission members will review submitted walls quarterly. We will do a site visit and evaluate at the wall. At that time, we will determine if it can be added to our “inventory” list of walls to be considered for future projects. We will let you know at that time if we have added your wall to our inventory. After that, you will not be contacted unless there is a project that is a good fit for your wall. At that time, we would contact you and begin the process of working with you to secure the wall with the deed amendment process.

While the Newton Public Art Commission will be in control of choosing the art, the building owner will be given the opportunity to review the design and will have right of refusal before the project is started if they no longer want to participate.

The Newton Public Art Commission looks forward to receiving your wall submissions and working together with local building owners to bring additional murals to life.
